Only positive reward based training is used to achieve quicker and more reliable results.
Training Tips
Never train when you are stressed or in a hurry.
Always be consistent with your vocal commands and hand signals.
Keep training sessions short - 3 or 4 short sessions are better than one long arduous one!
Always finish your training sessions on a high.
Always reward your dog for doing well.
When using treats, use high quality tidbits, something that your dog doesn't normally have. Suggestions include cheese, hot dog sausage, ham, liver cake, garlic sausage etc..
To begin with always reward your dog with treats and verbal praise. As your dog progresses you can gradually reduce the food rewards but always praise.
Don't ask your dog to do something when the chances of getting the correct response is slim i.e. when the distractions are too great. If you do, you are letting your dog know that 'sometimes' it can choose to ignore you.
Remember that saying your dogs name should be an indication that you either want the dog to do something or to pay attention to you. So try not to use their name in a negative way.
Always praise your dog for returning to you - even if you have been waiting for 15 minutes. You should always make returning to you a positive and pleasant thing for the dog to do.
Training should be fun for both of you!
